Both seek equality and protection

Congresswoman Maxine Waters was the keynote speaker at a recent forum designed to help Black and other non-White businesses, as well as those run by women, gain greater access to major banks and brokers to help sustain and establish their corporations.

“Since the recession really took hold in December 2007,” the congresswoman explained, “about 2.3 million homes have been repossessed by banks. Currently, about one in 10 American households, with a mortgage, is at risk of foreclosure.”

Companies remain slow to hire

Many United Sates companies and businesses displayed their lack of confidence about hiring for the third consecutive month in July, giving indications that the nation’s economy will continue to grow slowly for the rest of the year. As a result the unemployment rate held steady at 9.5 percent.

Private employers added a net total of 71,000 jobs last month, which is well below the 200,000 or more jobs needed each month to reduce the unemployment rate.

One million teens push numbers higher

The unemployment rate in approximately 75 percent of large cities in the United States increased in June, as nearly 1 million teenagers entered the workforce looking for summer jobs.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently reported that the jobless rate increased in 291 of 374 big cities in June, while at the same time decreasing in 55 areas and holding steady in 28. That is in contrast with the trend of the previous three months, when joblessness fell in most metropolitan areas.

Useful information for Blacks

Two years have passed since the collapse of Bear Stearns under the presidential administration of George W. Bush, and a year has passed since the financial crisis reached its deepest abyss.

Trillions of dollars in household income and more than eight million jobs were lost, primarily, because of failures in our financial system during Bush’s presidency from 2000 through 2008.
