National Labor Relations Board issues complaint

In a sharp rebuke of controversial hospital chain Prime Healthcare, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued a complaint against the corporate giant for its treatment of workers at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood. The wide-ranging allegations against Prime include interrogation and surveillance of workers, bad faith contract negotiations with its work force, and unlawful implementation of an employee health insurance plan.

Representative accused of compelling congressional staff to work on campaign

Representative Laura Richardson recently agreed to pay a $10,000 fine for forcing her Congressional staff members to work on her 2010 campaign.

The House Ethics Committee recommended the punishment and claimed that Richardson also used official goveernment resources for personal purposes and obstructed the committee’s investigation by attempts to alter evidence and efforts to influence the testimony of staff members who would be witnesses in the investigation.

Anthony Wayne Smith could face death penalty

Anthony Wayne Smith, the former defensive end for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders who was already awaiting retrial for the 2008 murder of Maurilio Ponce, is back in the spotlight after being charged with three additional murders. Wednesday he entered a plea of not guilty on all charges.

Nonprofit fights bullying in schools

Founded by Elissa Kravetz, The Farley Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading a message of love, kindness and inclusion in schools and camps throughout the country, is on a mission to help make the ever-increasing trend of bullying a thing of the past.

This nonprofit has been in the making ever since Kravetz was first bullied in the seventh grade.

Giving back in a non-judgmental way

Love of God is a non-church-affiliated, Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization providing home-cooked meals, clothing and toiletries to homeless men, women and children. The organization works in Los Angeles and Orange County with eight projects that serve up to 750 people per project.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
