Sloane Stephens beats compatriot Serena Williams to reach Australian Open semis

(CNN) -- American teenager Sloane Stephens stunned her compatriot Serena Williams on Wednesday, beating the 15-time grand slam winner 3-6 7-5 6-4 to reach the Australian Open semifinals.

The 29th seed, playing in her first grand slam quarterfinal, came from once set down to overcome third seed Williams who suffered a back injury having already rolled an ankle earlier in the tournament.

Despite Williams' fitness problems, few had given Stephens a chance of beating the five-time Melbourne champion.

Supersonics set for relaunch in Seattle

(CNN) -- Seattle is set to welcome NBA basketball back to the city following the sale of the Sacramento Kings, in a move which is expected to relaunch the Supersonics franchise.

Chris Hansen, whose group is reported to have purchased a 65% share of the Kings franchise, valued at $525 million, plans to relocate the team to Seattle, which lost its original franchise when owners moved the team to Oklahoma City in 2008.

The deal will see Hansen take the Maloof family's 53% share of the team as well as minority owner Bob Hernreich's 12% stake.

49ers and Ravens -- and Harbaugh brothers -- to face off in Super Bowl XLVII

(CNN) -- One Harbaugh will win Super Bowl XLVII. Another will lose it.

That much is guaranteed after the San Francisco 49ers, coached by Jim Harbaugh, and the Baltimore Ravens, led by his brother John Harbaugh, beat their respective foes in conference championship games Sunday. Those wins mean the Harbaughs will be the first siblings to face off as head coaches in the NFL's title contest and, in fact, for any major U.S. professional sports championship.

Alicia Keys has been tapped to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl XLVII.

The “Girl on Fire” songstress will belt out “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the pregame fun at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. You’ll catch her performance prior to kickoff.

This is Keys’ third time participating in the Super Bowl. She joins a long list of legends who have sung the nation’s anthem ahead of the big game, including Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Faith Hill, Mariah Carey and more.

Richard Blanco, 46, who is openly gay, is a Cuban born in Spain

Richard Blanco, the poet who likes to describe himself as being made in Cuba, assembled in Spain and imported to the United States, will serve as the inaugural poet when President Barack Obama takes the oath of office for a second term this month.

Blanco will be the first Latino, the first openly gay person and the youngest poet to serve in the highly coveted role.

A statement from the inaugural committee said Blanco was chosen because the power of his poetry is rooted in American identity.

California
San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out their sixth home restoration project on Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14. as part of the “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” (H3) program created by the nonprofit Embrace. The five-day effort will take place at the home of medically retired Marine Corps Capt. Sarah Bettencourt. Bettencourt served with many different units across the country during the Global War on Terrorism and developed a rare neurological disorder in 2008. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college-student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities. The project for the Bettencourts’ home includes kitchen and bathroom remodeling, building ADA-compliant disability ramps, widening their driveway to ADA standards, widening doorways and landscaping.

The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will showcase its five-year community research project on African American identity with the program “The Will to Adorn: African American Diversity, Style, and Identity.” This multicity collaboration examines the history and culture of the aesthetics of African Americans. The festival will be held June 26-30 and July 3-7, outdoors on the National Mall between Seventh and 14th streets. “Whether we realize it or not, we are all dress artists. The way we compose our look is a creative expression of our ideas about who we are and who we aspire to be,” said Diana N’Diaye, program curator. “This program explores the diversity of African American traditions of style, but also teaches young people the importance of documenting their own culture and saving that information for themselves and future generations.”
