Hands-on and theoretical training given

Highland High School in the city of Palmdale is one of the many campuses in the Antelope Valley that offers students the opportunity to engage in an academy geared to a certain career path.

The Law and Government Academy, founded in 1989, helps Highland High school students decide if they are choosing the correct career by giving them the opportunity to take courses, internships and meet professionals in the law enforcement field.

Justice Department agrees to investigate

Former BART transit police officer Johannes Mehserle was sentenced Friday to two years in jail for the death of Oscar Grant–much less than he would have incurred had the judge applied California’s “gun enhancement” law that normally mandates heavy sentences, when firearms are used in a crime.

The case focused mainly on whether or not to instate the gun enhancement law, which could have increased Mehserle’s sentence to 14 years. The law automatically increases a sentence, if a firearm is used in commission of a crime.

Special education and prejudice in AV schools

PALMDALE, Calif.—On Saturday night at Palmdale’s Brunswick Vista Lanes, parents from all over the Antelope Valley shared their horror stories of prejudice within the local school districts. Led by Palmdale resident and The Community Action League (TCAL) member, Cynthia Beverly, the parent group (called Only One Way Up) not only told their stories, but also proposed solutions.
