From 1886 to present day

April 15, 2013: Two bombs were detonated back to back near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The bombs exploded at about 2:42 p.m. in the afternoon, one 13 seconds behind the other, as some runners were finishing the race. At least three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy. More than 170 people were injured. The first explosion happened on Boylston Street close to the finish line. The second blast exploded about 100 yards away. A third explosion occurred an hour after the first two, but it was a controlled explosion by authorities.

Had been despondent over school suspension

PALMDALE, calif. — A 13-year-old boy who went missing in Palmdale after he became despondent over being suspended from school for fighting has shot himself to death in Kern County, authorities said today.

Nigel Hardy was found in Kern County around 8:30 p.m. Monday and taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials.

Skull discovered Sunday

PALMDALE, Calif. — Authorities today found more human remains near a Palmdale location where a human skull was found on Sunday.

The first discovery was made about 4:50 p.m. Sunday in the 6200 block of West Avenue N, said Deputy Irys Alvarez of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

This morning, sheriff’s homicide detectives and coroner’s office investigators searched the area “and found more human remains,” Deputy Rich Peña said.

Battled disease for 25 years

Annette Funicello, one of the best-known members of the original 1950s “Mickey Mouse Club” and a star of numerous 1960s “beach party” films, died Monday at a California hospital, the Walt Disney Co. said.

Funicello, who was 70, “died peacefully from complications due to multiple sclerosis, a disease she battled for more than 25 years,” the Disney statement said.
