Program encourages fourth graders

The driving goal of “I’m Going to College” is fostering an ambition among elementary school-age children to go to college.

This free, half-day event offered Aug. 14 by Antelope Valley College from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the AVC campus, is open to youngsters entering the fourth grade. Each child must be accompanied by no more than one parent or guardian.

“I’m Going to College” is a series of workshops covering such topics as preparing for and accessing college, paying for school, and choosing subject areas to study or choosing a major.

“What we’re trying to do is help to create more of a college-going culture in the Antelope Valley by reaching kids and parents in elementary school,” said Michelle Hernandez, the college’s outreach director. She observed that concepts of attending college are shaped in children at an early age.

Last year’s event attracted hundreds of young people and their parents. “This is a fun event,” Hernandez says. “We want people to understand that they can attend college no matter their background or income. There are great opportunities just waiting for these young people.”

Interested parents must register their children by July 30, by calling (661) 722-6331.
